Acquired syphilis is divided into primary, secondary and tertiary types - the latter two becoming rarer with the the development of adequate antibiotic control.

Syphilis can also be transmitted vertically from mother to baby resulting in congenital syphilis.

Syphilis may become latent at any stage.
