bleeding (haematuria)

Haematuria is the presence of red blood cells in the urine.

There is no consensus as to what the 'normal' upper limit for red blood cells in the urine should be. Recommendations vary between two and five per high-power field on urine microscopy.

Note that in the context of indications for dipsticking urine for possible haematuria (in the context of guidelines for the management of chronic kidney disease (2))

  • dipstick urinalysis for blood is indicated as part of the initial assessment of patients with
    • newly detected GFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2
    • newly discovered proteinuria
    • suspected multisystem disease with possible renal involvement
