Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that are characterized by a pathological
change in the intraocular pressure. Almost invariably there is an increase in
pressure which is sufficient to cause damage to the optic nerve head and causes
changes in the visual field. The mean value for intraocular pressure is
15-16 mm Hg with a standard deviation of +/- 2.5. The upper limit of normal is
considered to be 21 mm Hg. Note: - about 2% of adults have an intraocular
pressure over 21 mmHg with no evidence of glaucoma (1)
