Proptosis is the word used to describe forward displacement or bulging. It is usually used in the context of the eye where it is known as exophthalmos.

Bilateral proptosis is almost certainly due to Grave's disease. The most common cause of a unilateral proptosis is Grave's disease, also, but not uncommonly, other diseases may be responsible.
