Metabolic myopathies

Any patient presenting with proximal weakness should be carefully screened for any metabolic cause of a myopathy.

Possible causes of metabolic myopathy include:

  • thyroid disease:
    • hyperthyroidism
    • hypothyroidism
  • corticosteroid excess
    • iatrogenic
    • Cushing's disease
    • Conn's syndrome
  • biochemical abnormalities:
    • hypokalaemia
    • hyperkalaemia
    • hypercalcaemia
    • hypomagnesaemia
  • abnormalities in energy producing metabolic pathways
    • glycogen storage disorders
    • diabetes mellitus
  • multiple endocrine neoplasia type IIB
