pleural friction rub

A pleural friction rub occurs when thickened, roughened pleural surfaces rub together as the lungs expand and contract.

On auscultation, a continuous or intermittent grating sound is heard.

Causes include:

  • pulmonary infarction
  • pneumonia
  • rarely, a pleural malignancy or spontaneous pneumothorax
