Congenital oesophageal hernia include:

  • congenital paraoesophageal hernia:
    • extremely rare
    • possibly caused by a developmental defect in the right crus of the diaphragm
    • defect is usually anteriorly and to the right of the oesophagus
    • the oesophageal hiatus is usually not affected:
      • this retains the functional competence of the oesophago-gastric junction
      • consequently, there are few problems with reflux
    • may not present clinically, but may be discovered incidentally or as a result of the stomach rolling up into the sac and incarcerating

congenital sliding hernia:

  • may be due to a short oesophagus
