Chronic inflammation is an inflammatory state characterised by inflammatory processes which continue for a relatively long duration. It denotes an arbitrary threshold beyond the state of acute inflammation when there are differences in:

  • cytology
  • histology
  • cardinal signs
  • systemic symptoms

It may arise as an extension of acute inflammation, after recurrent bouts of acute inflammation with partial resolution between, and as a new entity with no precedent.

The latter state is particularly characteristic of granulomatous inflammation.
