These reactions occur when IgG class antibodies directed towards cell surface antigens have a stimulating effect on their target.

It is thought that such a reaction may occur in the pathogenesis of neonatal hyperthyroidism, where maternal stimulating anti-thyroid IgG antibodies are able to cross the placenta.
