  • among South Asians (Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis) in the UK the death rate from CHD is higher than the national average. This applies to both sexes, Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims
  • South Asian men have an age-standardised mortality rate about 40% higher than the whole population, and for women the figure is 51%

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in South Asians:

  • previous risk calculator stated that estimated CVD risk for men with a South Asian background should be increased by a factor of 1.4 - however QRISK2 suggested in the current NICE guidance uses ethnicity as a parameter in the risk calculation and so no adjustment factor is necessary
