Latissimus dorsi is tested by asking the patient to abduct each arm above the head. They are then instructed to adduct the arm against resistance from the examiner. The rotating inferior border of the muscle can be felt below the broader teres major in the posterior axillary fold.
Coughing accentuates the contraction of the muscle to the palpating hand.
