Possible causes include:

  • alcohol
  • liver cirrhosis
  • reticulocytosis
  • marrow infiltration
  • hypothyroidism / myxoedema
  • myleloproliferative disease
  • myelodysplastic syndrome
  • acquired sideroblastic anaemia
