Carbimazole

Carbimazole is an antithyroid drug, used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. Alternatively, the active metabolite methimazole may be prescribed in the USA.

Carbimazole's main action is to inhibit the organification of iodide and hence, the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Additionally, it has mild immunosuppressive activity which reduces the serum level of TSH receptor antibody but this is not thought to contribute significantly to its efficacy.
