Mediastinal surface lung (anatomy)

The medial or mediastinal surface of the lung is bounded by:

  • inferiorly, the diaphragmatic border of the lung
  • anteriorly, the anterior border of the lung
  • superiorly, the apex of the lung
  • posteriorly, the posterior border of the lung

These boundaries are the same as those of the costal surface of the lung; the difference is that mediastinal surface faces medially, is concave, and, as the name suggests, it forms the lateral boundary of the mediastinum. Indeed, the mediastinum is the source of the lung root on each side which enters the hilum.

The mediastinal surface of the lung the right and left sides differs somewhat - see submenu.
