The aetiology of binocular diplopia may be:

  • neurogenic - paralytic squint

  • muscular:
    • myasthenia gravis - diplopia usually with a ptosis
    • exophthalmic ophthalmoplegia

  • mechanical:
    • blow out fracture
    • displacement of globe by an orbital tumour
