Secretin is a gastrointestinal hormone that originating from S cells in the duodenum and upper jejunal mucosa in response to intraluminal acid.

It is a polypeptide of 27 amino acids.

Functions include:

  • stimulation of pancreatic bicarbonate secretion
  • enhanced secretion of pancreatic enzymes in response to cholecystokinin
  • inhibition of acid secretion; stimulation of pepsin secretion
  • causes a rapid rise in gastrin levels in a patient with a gastrinoma
  • increased flow of hepatic bile
  • increased glucose-induced insulin secretion
