Hyperuricaemia and renal failure often co-exist. The hyperuricaemia may be the result of renal failure or may be its cause, for example in:

  • the use of cytotoxic drugs in lymphoproliferative or myeloproliferative disorders
  • muscle necrosis e.g. in crush syndrome
  • inherited diseases e.g. Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, von Gierke's disease
