A bacteriostatic is an agent that acts to inhibit the growth or multiplication of bacteria giving the host immune system 'time' to mount a lethal response to the bacteria.

Bacteriostatic agents include:

  • sulphonamides
  • tetracyclines
  • chloramphenicol
  • erthryomycin
  • trimethoprim
