The Langerhans cell functions in antigen presentation:

  • it has surface receptors for:
    • complement component C3b
    • IgG and IgE
  • it has class II major histocompatability antigens on its surface

It takes up antigen and processes it before joining with a T lymphocyte to trigger activation. Its site makes it ideally suited for encountering new cutaneous antigen; overzealous or disordered response can give rise to contact hypersensitivity reactions.
