Left ventricular ejection fraction is usually determined by echocardiography or radiographic ventriculography. The ejection fraction is:
stroke volume = (end diastolic volume - end systolic volume)
ejection fraction = stroke volume / end diastolic volume
The normal range for the ejection fraction is:
- 63-77% for males
- 55-75% for females (reference: Measurements in Cardiology)
An average ejection fraction of 67% corresponds in an adult to 70-80 ml of
blood.
The ejection fraction is a good predictor of longevity in patients with heart failure but does not correlate with symptomatic limitation.
