AIDS dementia is a feature of symptomatic AIDS.

Up to 50% of children and 30% of adults with AIDS will suffer significant cognitive dysfunction. There is no evidence that asymptomatic HIV-positive individuals suffer progressive cognitive impairment.

In 6% of patients, dementia is the presenting AIDS-defining illness.
