These are generally the result of atrial or ventricular ectopics which are then followed by a compensatory pause. In some cases it may be possible for the patient to tap out the frequency of the 'dropped' heart beat eg one in five.

  • If this symptom is the result of ectopic heart beats then it is generally more noticeable at rest. This is because a slower heart rate provides more opportunity for ectopics to occur.
