Gluteus medius and minimus tend to act as a single unit in terms of their actions:

  • abduction of the hip joint:
    • with greater functional relevance, they prevent adduction of the ipsilateral hip when body weight is supported only on this side during walking
    • loss of this function is one cause of a positive Trendelenburg's sign
  • medial rotation of the hip
