Oestrone is a female sex hormone produced from the precursor steroid androstenedione. It may also be produced by interconversion from oestradiol and oestriol.

Oestrone can form both oestradiol and oestriol. Oestrone is sulphated in the liver; this may provide a storage form for the hormone.
