Sodium stibogluconate is used in the treatment of leishmaniasis.

This drug is given for at least 20 days by intravenous or intramuscular injection. Doses should be set by local experts.

Cautions:

  • intravenous injection should be stopped if coughing or substernal pain develops
  • intramuscular injection is painful

Side effects:

  • anorexia
  • vomiting
  • coughing
  • substernal pain
