Serratus anterior is supplied by the long thoracic nerve which arises from the C5, C6 and C7 roots of the brachial plexus. It forms on the surface of the most superior digitation of the muscle and supplies the muscle from this superficial aspect as it descends just posterior to the midaxillary line.

C5 supplies the two uppermost digitations; C7 supplies the lowest four digitations; C6 supplies the intervening two digitations.

The skin overlying serratus anterior has a sensory supply of T3 to T7.
