Geniohyoid is one of the suprahyoid muscles of the anterior triangle of the neck. It arises from the inferior mental spine on the posterior surface of the symphysis menti of the mandible. As a narrow strap bilaterally, it passes posteriorly and slightly inferiorly to insert into the medial and superior part of the body of the hyoid bone.

Geniohyoid is innervated by fibres from the first cervical (C1) nerve root which are relayed via the hypoglossal nerve.

It acts to elevate and protract the hyoid bone. This is used during swallowing to shorten the oral cavity and widen the pharynx during swallowing.
